MT FAQs
Q: What
is medical transcription ?
In the broadest sense, it is the act of listening
to the doctor's dictation on the treatment given to the patient and
typing it out using a word processor. The dictation could be operative
reports, progress notes, clinic notes, discharge summaries, emergency
room reports, etc.
The usual practice adopted by doctors is to dictate and record information
and findings of the patient, either into audiotape, Dictaphone or
on to digital voice processing systems. These tapes are then sent
to overseas medical transcription companies engaged in medical transcription
to convert these voice dictations into text reports. These files represent
the patient's treatment history, including assessment, workup, therapeutic
procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc.
